I'm often asked, "So... why the name 'Lancelot's Pram'?" What does it mean? Is there any significance...?
Good question! The answer is strange yet simple...
Waaaaaaaay back in 1989, I was in Windwood Studios in Lawson NSW recording an album "Fish!" with The Surprise. I would always sit-in the corner of the vocal recording booth while they'd be doing takes of all the vocals... just sitting there, quietly soaking it all in.
When they were recording the vocals of one of my old song-ditties "Better Days", during the long fade-out, for some inexplicable random reason I whispered loudly "Lancelot's Pram", which unbeknownst to me at the time was picked-up by the live vocal mic.
When it came to the final mix-down a few days later, the random whispering was drawn to everyones' attention, much to their bemused hilarious back-slapping response. "Sounds like some old 60's psychedelic song name!" The random whispering effect never really survived the final mix, tho, and must still exist there somewhere on those old master tapes... long lost in the never-ending fade-out...
Whenever I would perform somewhere as a solo performer in the years afterwards, I would call myself "Lancelot's Pram", simply because I enjoyed the connection between the stray randomness of it all somehow.
OK OK... not much of an answer, nor much more better a reason for the name... apart that basically - I
like it! There's no mysterious hidden significance or Freudian metaphor... nothing like that! Just a nice fun piece of absurd spoken randomness that life is full of, if we stop and listen long enough.
